Collaboration and turning ideas into market-ready solutions

What are some of the challenges that innovation actors face, and what are some of the solutions to these challenges? Successfully transitioning research into market-ready solutions requires understanding market needs, shaping products to fit requirements, and developing a commercialisation plan. To address these challenges, collaboration between experts and researchers in Pathfinder and Transition projects funding programmes managed by the European Innovation Council (EIC) to support innovation and research at different stages of development, with the involvement of Business Angels and Innovation Actors, is essential.

Key support mechanisms, such as technological brokers, early engagement with investors, and support programs from the EIC programmes play a vital role in this process. Additionally, involving technology transfer offices (TTOS) contributes to successful commercialisation. These insights underscore the importance of collaboration and the diverse roles played by stakeholders in driving innovation and overcoming obstacles.

The ESIL workshop which recently took place in Zagreb, Croatia featured a dedicated session on EIC Pathfinder and EIC Transition projects, highlighting the role of Business Angels, Venture Builders and other Innovation actors in supporting early-stage research solutions. Two EIC projects were represented:

The session explored the challenges, opportunities, and the crucial role of business angels and innovation actors in providing support and guidance.

Key highlights and takeaways:

  1. Collaboration for innovation: Pathfinder and Transition projects bring together experts and researchers to develop innovative technologies and solutions. These projects aim to bridge the gap between research and market needs, emphasising the crucial involvement of Business Angels and Innovation Actors right from the start.
  2. Overcoming implementation challenges: The implementation phase of these projects poses several challenges. Understanding market needs, shaping the product to fit market requirements, and developing a long-term plan for commercialisation are crucial aspects that require careful consideration.
  3. Empowering Business Angels and Innovation Actors: The panel emphasised the importance of business angels and innovation actors in supporting Pathfinder and Transition projects. These stakeholders play a vital role in bridging the gap between research and market needs, providing guidance, and facilitating connections with potential investors and partners.
  4. Early engagement with technological brokers: Engaging with technological brokers can be a game-changer during project development. These experts offer technical expertise, industry knowledge, and valuable connections that help shape the technology and explore potential market applications.
  5. Collaboration with Investors and Business Angels: The panel highlighted the need for early engagement with investors and business angels. Their involvement from the beginning can help shape the project towards market needs, provide financial support, and offer valuable insights into commercialisation strategies.
  6. Available support from EIC: The EIC offers various support programmes, including Tech2Market activities and pre-accelerator initiatives. These programmes provide researchers and innovators with guidance, training, and essential resources to navigate the complex transition from research to commercialisation.
  7. Importance of Technology Transfer Offices: Involving technology transfer offices from the beginning can contribute to successful commercialisation. These offices bring expertise in managing intellectual property, licensing agreements, and industry partnerships, ensuring a smooth transition from research to market.

By leveraging the strategies and insights provided during the session, researchers and innovators can maximise project impact and accelerate commercialisation. Support networks, actors, and tools play a vital role in this process, offering opportunities for growth within the innovation ecosystem.
